Major League Soccer takes a step towards transparency by publicly disclosing the amount of General Allocation Money (GAM) each team has available for the 2025 season.
Major League Soccer ( MLS ) has taken an unprecedented step by publicly disclosing the amount of general allocation money ( GAM ) each of its 30 clubs has available for use in 2025. GAM is a mechanism designed to enhance teams' spending power in roster construction, allowing them to acquire players, international roster slots, and draft picks.
Traditionally, the league only revealed GAM figures during trades, citing the need to protect the interests of MLS and its clubs during negotiations with potential players or teams from other leagues. However, the league has now opted for transparency, providing a detailed breakdown of each club's GAM allocation for 2025. The 2024 salary cap budget for MLS clubs stood at $5.47 million, encompassing the senior roster (up to 18 or 20 players out of a 30-man total roster). For 2025, the league is distributing $2.93 million in GAM to each team, with expansion side San Diego FC receiving an additional $2.765 million. Despite this boost, San Diego's total GAM of $5.095 million places them behind clubs like Atlanta United ($6.503.478), New England ($5.585.931), and St. Louis City FC ($5.306.579). The Vancouver Whitecaps lead their Canadian rivals with $3.658.458 in 2025 GAM, followed by Toronto FC ($3.318.648) and CF Montreal ($2.948.106)
