... [+]Alejandro Bedoya is no slouch on the soccer field. The former U.S. national team stalwart spent nearly eight years playing in Europe before returning stateside in 2016, and he’s fresh off leading Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union to their best season in franchise history.
True financial success for an athlete, then, is about leveraging a relatively short career—even the longest-playing soccer stars rarely make it into their 40s—into off-field dividends. Luckily for Bedoya, who joined his dad on business trips as a kid and studied finance while at Boston College, it’s something he’s long prepared for: “Growing up, I always thought if I wasn’t a professional soccer player, I always envisioned myself working in New York on Wall Street.
The general plan is to hold the investments long-term, building equity while clearing dividends on the rental income . Bedoya also has plans to expand from management into development, specifically with a lot that’s been zoned to build up to three townhomes; for the time being, his sister is renting the existing property there.Bedoya’s main investment strategy has been to use debt to limit how much skin he has in the game.
