Colson Montgomery added an RBI double to help Chicago to a 3-0 victory.
Starting pitchers Hagen Smith and Parker Messick dominated early on, racking up strike outs through three innings. But in the top of the fourth, after a Miguel Vargas single, the White Sox struck.
Messick's first-pitch sinker to Murakami was sent deep into the right-field seats at Progressive Field to put the visitors up 2-0. Murakami's homer traveled 440 feet with an exit velocity of 112.2 mph, making it the hardest hit ball of this postseason. The Guardians had multiple opportunities to break through but failed to capitalize in consecutive innings when they had the bases loaded. In total, they had seven runners left on base in the game.
Chicago added an insurance run in the seventh inning, when Colson Montgomery's double scored Kyle Teel after catcher Austin Hedges could not hang on to the ball. Grant Taylor spun four scoreless frames for the Sox, with six strikeouts and just two hits allowed, to shut the Guardians down the rest of the way and seal the Game 1 win for Chicago.
Here's how all of the action from Game 1 of the ALDS between the Guardians and White Sox played out:A Munetaka Murakami 2-run home run and a Colson Montgomery RBI double helped the White Sox to a 3-0 Game 1 victory over the Guardians. Cleveland had its chances but failed to get anything out of having the bases loaded in back-to-back innings.
Last chance saloon here for the Guardians as we head to the bottom of the 9th inning at Progressive Field. Cleveland trails the White Sox 3-0 in Game 1 of the ALDS. White Sox pitchers have struck out nine Guardians batters in Game 1. Jo Adell accounts for four of those K's.
The White Sox are cruising through eight innings. Cleveland goes 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 8th and is down to its final three outs, trailing 3-0. Colson Montgomery squibs a hit down the left-field line with the Guardians playing the shift against the left-hander. White Sox third-base coach Justin Jirschele sends Kyle Teel, which initially looked to be the wrong decision.
But Austin Hedges could not hang on to the ball, and the run scored. Ángel Martínez takes a double away from Tommy Pham catching a fly ball against the left-field wall. He then relays the ball back to first base to double up Miguel Vargas to end the inning and the Chicago threat. The Guardians go down in order as Kay retires the side.
Cleveland has four innings left to claw back into this game. Messick exits after surrendering a leadoff single to Colson Montgomery in the top of the 5th inning. Messick's final line: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K Kay escapes the bases loaded jam as he gets Rocchio to fly out to Montgomery in right field. Cleveland fails to get on the scoreboard two innings in a row with bases loaded.
Kay walks Hedges and the Guardians have bases loaded for the second straight inning. Brayan Rocchio is coming to bat. Bazzana takes the first pitch and rips it down the right field line for a double. Cleveland now has runners on second and third base and Austin Hedges coming to bat.
Jordan Hicks comes in for Bryan Hudson for the White Sox and strikes out Jo Adell and Angel Martínez. Will Venable makes another pitching change as Anthony Kay comes on to face Travis Bazzana with two outs in the bottom of the 4th inning. Following the Munetaka Murakami home run, Parker Messick gets Brenton Doyle to hit into a double play before Kyle Teel flies out to end the top of the 4th inning.
