Negotiations between MLB and the union had been a zero-sum game. Now the sides are on the same track and there’s a real chance to save the season. (Via ShiDavidi)

TORONTO – A common misconception about the impasse between Major League Baseball and its players is that this has been simply a fight about money, and that there’s a sweet spot to be found in terms of dollars that will save the 2020 season. At its most basic level, sure, fair enough, but only if you’re really looking at things in a vacuum.

As a result, they weren’t “even in the same room,” says Greg Bouris, the Major League Baseball Players Association’s communications director from 1998-2018 who now runs a consultancy firm, power X communications, and is director of the undergraduate sports management program at Adelphi University. It’s a significant move, one that creates an actual basis for negotiation. One report suggested a deal was done, but wording matters, and the players union quickly rebuffed that.Still, Manfred added that, “I am encouraging the clubs to move forward and I trust Tony is doing the same,” which sounds like there’s an actual opening to finalize a deal now that the pay mechanisms roadblock has been circumvented.
