Former MLB pitcher now works as Cincinnati Reds broadcaster
Jeff Brantley, who grew up in Hoover, pitched the first six of his 14 MLB seasons with the San Francisco Giants. The Giants meet the St. Louis Cardinals — another of the five big-league teams for which Brantley played — in the MLB at Rickwood Field game in Birmingham on June 20. and The Birmingham News will be producing weekly stories that showcase the history of Rickwood Field , and history of baseball in the state of Alabama.
“Rickwood: The legacy of America’s oldest ballpark” takes a deep dive at stories from the Negro Leagues to MLB icons playing at the historic venue, and how things are progressing as the “MLB at Rickwood Field” game takes place on June 20 between the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals. In the entire history of Major League Baseball, only a handful of men with ties to the state of Alabama have played for both the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals, the two teams that will face off in the “MLB at Rickwood Field” game in Birmingham on June 20.
One of those is Jeff Brantley, who grew up just outside Birmingham in Hoover and led W.A. Berry High School to a state championship in 1981, then was an All-American at Mississippi State in 1985 before embarking on a 14-year career as a standout relief pitcher with five different MLB teams from 1988-2001.
