Snowpack levels are above normal in some regions of British Columbia, but below normal in others, raising concerns about potential drought conditions in the coming months.
British Columbia's snowpack is showing mixed results, with some regions experiencing above-average levels while others are significantly below normal. As of January 1st, the province-wide snowpack stood at 87% of normal levels. This is a marked improvement from the 56% recorded on January 1st, 2024, but it's not enough to alleviate concerns about potential summer droughts. The Vancouver Island and Boundary regions are faring well, with snowpacks at 117% and 115% of normal respectively.
However, other areas, particularly in the northwest, are experiencing declines. The Snow Survey and Water Supply Bulletin, conducted by the province's Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, uses data from 40 manual snow courses and 113 automated snow weather services. While the current situation raises concerns, the report emphasizes that seasonal snowpacks can still change significantly over the next few months depending on weather patterns
