This week, Lindsay Gaines Fincher’s attention is trained on the MissAmerica pageant in Connecticut, where she’s competing against 50 other women for the national title. A new winner will be announced on tonight.

have won the Miss America title in the past -- Deidre Downs in 2004, Heather Whitestone in 1994, and Yolande Betbeze in 1950 -- and Fincher has her eyes on the prize.AL.com

Don’t call her overconfident or egotistical, however. Fincher says her quest to become Miss America is a lifelong dream, and she’s honored to represent her state. “I love it when I get to visit a school,” Fincher says. “I absolutely love children and working with educators. I love to be hands-on with students. The days can be long and be tiring -- I’ve traveled all over the state of Alabama, well over 15,000 miles already -- but I always leave with a smile on my face.”If Fincher makes the top five on Thursday at Miss America, she’ll be able to showcase her social impact initiative for the streaming audience during a Q&A session with the judges.

Lindsay Fincher warms up backstage before competing in talent during the finale of the 2022 Miss Alabama Competition at Samford University’s Wright Center, July 2, 2022. Fincher has been part of the Miss Alabama organization since age 15, competing for Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen, then moving on to the Miss Alabama pageant. She’s quick to credit the organization as an influence on the woman she is today, and Fincher says it’s clear that folks in her home state really care about Miss Alabama.

“It’s been really cool to spread the mission of Miss Alabama, to break down stereotypes and talk about scholarships and personal and professional development,” Fincher says. “Miss Alabama is not just a beauty competition. I grew up in a really rural community in Alabama, Wedowee, and I just know there are girls in communities like mine who don’t know what Miss Alabama can do for you, or the friendships you can make.”with AL.
