Seven Padres prospects to play in next month's Arizona Fall League
Jackson Merrill’s first full year in professional ball won’t end in the California League Championship Series.
Instead, the 19-year-old shortstop will head to Arizona to headline seven Padres representatives on the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. The circuit, a prospect finishing school of sorts for teams’ promising minor leaguers, will begin Oct. 3 and will feature rules headed to the majors next season: a pitch clock, an infield shift ban and larger bases.An automatic ball-strike challenge system will also be in play at Salt River Fields and Chase Field. Under this system, in play in the Florida State League in 2022, batters, pitchers and catchers will have the opportunity to challenge an umpire’s ball or strike call.
The Padres’ first-rounder last year, Merrill paired six homers and 11 steals with a .339/.395/.511 batting line over 55 games split between low Single-A Lake Elsinore and a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona League.prospects list — was 5-for-8 with a double, three RBIs, two walks and three stolen bases in helping the Storm sweep the best-of-three southern division finals this week.
The best-of-three Cal League championship series begins Sunday at Lake Elsinore before Games 2 and 3, if necessary, will be held in Fresno.The hulking 21-year-old hit 21 homers in 155 games split between rehab in rookie-ball, high Single-A Fort Wayne and Double-A San Antonio, but also struck out 155 times in 90 games and penned a .220/.309/.489 batting line. Mears, at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, also hit .178/.277/.370 with four homers in 21 games after a promotion to the Double-A Texas League.
