The CRTC is holding public consultations on implementing Bill C\u002D11, and has asked what online streaming companies should have to register

He said he doesn’t think Facebook would be included. “YouTube could be because sometimes people upload exactly the same thing that you would get on Spotify, for example.”

Under the legislation, the CRTC doesn’t have the power to control what Canadians post or choose to watch online. But the CRTC does have the power to tell platforms like Netflix, YouTube or Spotify to include more Canadian content in the movies, TV shows, videos and music platforms they recommend or suggest to their users.

The CRTC is also asking for input on what kind of contributions online platforms will need to make in support of the Canadian broadcast system. The public and interested parties can submit comments online through the CRTC website, and the regulator will also hold a public hearing in Gatineau, Que., in November.
