Calaway bought a stake in the company in 2017 and previously served as non-executive chairman of the Australian mining firm Oracobre, which has developed lithium mines in Argentina.
Calaway hopes to begin operating the mine and on-site processing facility in 2026, producing 24,000 tons of lithium carbonate per year – , putting another layer of oversight over the mine and requiring Ioneer to take extra caution in protecting the plant – Calaway said he was hiring an on-site biologist to care for the plants and help them propagate.
“Open-pit mines are by their very nature destructive,” said Patrick Donnelly, a director with the group. “I don’t doubt the mine will be built at some point. It’s the contours of it we’re going to be haggling over.
