when they came across an unexpected sight: an artfully painted miniature boat launched by students more than 500 miles away in South Carolina.

Maria Earl and Jennifer Dragotta, teachers from Howe Hall AIMS Elementary, an arts infused magnet school in Goose Creek, South Carolina, said they were inspired to bring the program to their students after coming across an article about a miniboat from Rye, New Hampshire, that landed more than 3,000 miles away in Norway.

The entire Howe Hall AIMS Elementary had a hand in the miniboat project, they said. For example, the first grade brainstormed names for the boat and passed several options down to the kindergarten students for a vote. The second grade working on puzzle pieces that were adhered to the deck of the boat.

The vessel also included a special passenger, a stuffed Chameleon toy, in honor of a former teacher of Howe Hall Elementary School, Kathy Broughton, who died in 2020.
