A torrent of national scrutiny followed Brandon Miller to South Carolina on Wednesday, but Alabama’s star freshman left Columbia as the hero of the Tide’s latest SEC win.
Miller scored a career-best 41 points, including the game-tying layup at the end of regulation, in Alabama’s 78-76 overtime victory over the Gamecocks. Miller netted six of Alabama’s 10 points in the extra period, weaving to the basket to score the game-winner with less than a second remaining.
Miller was booed by South Carolina fans when he touched the ball and faced chants after his name surfaced in a Tuscaloosa court Tuesday during a hearing for former teammate Darius Miles’ capital murder charge. Miller was not charged and was not disciplined by Alabama as police considered him a witness, not a suspect.
Hours before Wednesday night’s 8 p.m. CT game in South Carolina, Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne told ESPN that Miller would play and the school shortly later issued a statement saying Miller remained part of the team. “I sincerely apologize for that. I know Greg shared some information earlier today, and I don’t really have anything more to add, other than what he’s already said.”
The back-and-forth game continued through the second half, and South Carolina took a five-point lead with 3:08 remaining. But Miller hit a three-pointer and fellow freshman Noah Clowney later scored off a Miller missed three-pointer to re-gain the Tide’s lead. South Carolina pulled back ahead in the final minute of regulation before Miller’s layup tied it.
“A lot of our other guys that had been scoring the ball well for us — I mean, shoot, we scored 78 points and only had two guys in double figures,” Oats said of Miller’s 41 and Charles Bediako’s 10 points. “That’s not typical for this team. We usually have pretty balanced scoring outside of that. Sears has been good for us, Jaden Bradley’s been good. Clowney’s been good. Nimari’s been shooting the ball pretty well. He couldn’t make a shot tonight.
