One of the Polaris planes is used regularly as a VIP jet to transport the prime minister and Governor General, while two are usually used to transport troops. Two others have been converted for midair refuelling, but can still carry a limited number of passengers if needed.
Within minutes of Trudeau touching down, the first message was sent flagging the problem that the prime minister should not use the same plane to fly home again. That plan would have left about 16 passengers having to take a commercial flight back to Canada. However, finding volunteers would prove difficult.
