We lost the endless parade of crab claws at Las Canarias when it became a River Walk shadow of itself called Four Brothers. All-you-can-eat Benedict at 18 Oaks finally had all it could eat, and J-Prime stopped with the nonstop prime rib. Fire took away the smoked salmon and Texas caviar at the Grill at Leon Springs.
The Pigpen on Broadway still throws a comfort-food buffet bash on Sundays, and there’s a long wait for the Sunday buffet service at Tony G’s Soul Food, but the golden age of the brunch buffet is over. In its place comes the rise of the all-brunch-all-the-time phenomenon, fostered by the national chains First Watch, Snooze and Eggspectation and taken to a more San Antonio place by our own Box St. All Day, Full Belly and Cullum’s Attaboy. Then came Blush, which opened in early March in Southtown, with Mimosa Gossip and Mae Dunne Kitchen & Goods on the way.
To find the Top 10 brunches in San Antonio, I weeded out the chains and visited 25 local spots. What I found reinforces the battle cry of the Sunday bourgeoisie: The brunch buffet is dead. Long live brunch.
