Photographer Mike Drew found changing colours in the forest as dry conditions across southern Alberta force nature to adapt.
Here along the Highwood, the colours were coming on strong but as I moved on south and away from the valley, things turned a bit more green.
I found a whole herd of chipmunks at one open patch on the forest’s edge. They were chasing around the whole area, some of them wrestling, others perched on rocks and eating dried flowers and seed heads while still others ran up and down nearby trees. Trust me, I mean no offence to the drivers of these rigs. They have a job to do and they were doing it, at least as far as I could tell, the best way they could. But these things are big and long and heavy and when they passed, I could feel the ground shake.Every time I pulled over, a truck would pass and I’d have to sit there with the windows rolled up to wait for the dust to settle before getting out.
The water was really low, the flow barely keeping the bowls full, but it was clear and cold and a little dipper bobbed along the rocky shore. I could still hear the trucks rumbling by but the dust, fortunately, never made it that far.
