Mike Drew: Rolling north as Alberta's crops pull into bloom yyc

The grain fields in the rolling hills further north looked lush, some of them with seed heads starting to fill out, others like a tall lawn. All of them were rippling in the now-blustery wind. Cattails around the smaller ponds were bent over and the yellow-headed blackbirds were having lots of fun trying to stay perched on them. The copses of aspens and poplars were trashing in the gusts.

Aspens grew thick here and the ground was damp and mossy among them. There were white anemones tucked in among the trunks and tiny vetches. The treetops were whipping in the wind but down in the shelter of the coulee, the breeze barely rippled the bright pink sainfoin and saskatoons.Article content I’d seen a few fields starting to bloom as I’d gone along but for some reason the ones closest to Linden were the furthest along. The yellow blossoms were so bright that even under the grey, smoke-tinted sky they absolutely glowed.

Closer to Carbon I found a pair of mule deer bucks that were tucked under a cutbank along the creek to get out of the wind and a small flock of waxwings that took off when the bucks decided to bounce away. Pretty birds, those guys. This patch of saskatoons was at almost full ripeness so I grabbed a plastic water bottle from the floor of the truck and waded in.

There was canola everywhere here, a lot of it still not bloomed but enough flowered out that it made a nice contrast with that blue/grey sky. Another week and, just like the saskatoon berries, the canola will be in its prime.Article contentThe brown waters of Serviceberry Creek mixed with the tea-coloured waters of the Rosebud River and I followed that downstream to Redland and on southward. But just over the hill from town, I slid to a stop.
