If they cared about my presence, they sure didn’t show it. They were swimming a little farther out on the water, pausing to groom their feathers or jamming their big bills down to snag a fish. I definitely picked a good place to park.
A stern-looking ring-billed gull forages at Severn Dam north of Standard, Ab., on Monday, June 12, 2023.I stayed for a few more minutes, aiming my camera up at passing gulls and down at a grackle having a bath by the shore. I shot down the pond toward folks fishing at the far end, their forms softened by the hot air tinted pastel by the smoke that lingered in the reservoir’s basin.
I am terrible at butterfly names but I know for sure there were tortoiseshells and painted ladies and they ran the gamut from fingernail to palm-sized. There were bees, too, natives like bumblebees and sweat bees and a few honeybees as well. Plus dragonflies and damselflies and bee-mimic flies and a bunch of other flying and crawling things.Article content
I drove on to another set of ponds on the south side of the hills — another lush oasis among the fields — and then cut back toward Severn again. And found a surprise on the way. But what looked loveliest to me was when it swam out into the open water away from shore and there was nothing but it, the gilded green water and the pelican’s reflection.
