We hope to put more emphasis on our riverfront, and build up the capital’s reputation as a place where walking is a pleasure.
In the case of a capital that is not the largest city of its country, such as Ottawa or Washington, that city and its downtown have a duty to represent the totality of a country. It is in this context that the National Capital Commission launches its review of the all-important, a master plan that presents the long-term perspectives of the federal government and the NCC on the future use and purpose of federal lands on both sides of the Ottawa River.
The anchors of this proposed new vision for our capital will be more emphasis on the Ottawa River to create new places along the riverfront and in the downtown cores and to continue the shift to active mobility throughout the core on both sides of the river. This could mean evolving the downtown from purpose-built offices to buildings that can adapt to the mixed-use reality of a vibrant urban setting. Just as it is important to have good open and green spaces, it’s equally important to have good buildings and a good built fabric, and to have the right amounts of each in combination. Like actual textile, if a thread is too loose, the cloth won’t hold together well. The tighter it is, the more durable and comfortable.
