(Photo by BillThe states involved in the Midwest coalition include Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky, according to a statement obtained by Michigan outletthat outlines a commitment to cooperation as the states look for a way to reopen that prioritizes health and safety.
According to the announcement, decisions will be based on: “facts, science, and recommendations from experts in health care, business, labor and education.” The leaders—a bipartisan alliance of 5 Republican governors and 2 Democratic governors—will consider a number of factors including hospital capacity, testing and tracing capabilities and new workplace social distancing rules when deciding on how to mitigate restrictions.
However, the note emphasizes that while the Midwestern governors plan to work in concert, reopenings will not happen all at once.The governors of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island announced on Monday ato work together to reopen the Northeast. California, Washington and Oregon formed a similar alliance also on Monday to coordinate rolling back restrictions on the West Coast.
