A man is facing charges for allegedly cashing stolen lottery tickets in an apparent theft ring, court records show.
Allen Joseph Darnell Willis, 33, of Benton Harbor, Michigan, told police he was homeless and did it for a $200 cut of every $500 he got. He declined to name the other man he claimed recruited him. The other man didn’t have an ID card and couldn’t cash the tickets, Willis said. Willis was charged Tuesday with money laundering and three counts of theft. He is not in custody in Lake County. He is ordered held without bail. The tickets were stolen in LaPorte County.
Security video showed two Black men in gloves breaking in around 12:30 a.m. They stole the lottery counter display and “destroyed several items” before leaving. Hours later, someone cashed a ticket around 4 a.m. at a Pilot gas station in Lake Station, then a Road Ranger truck stop in Lake Station around 4:20 a.m. Investigators estimated nearly 35 bins worth $8,000 in tickets were stolen, including $2,900 from the Hoosier Lottery. About $760 worth of tickets were redeemed between July 21-24.
