A Michigan judge is implementing a unique form of community service for misdemeanor shoplifters: washing cars in a Walmart parking lot. Judge Jeffrey Clothier believes this unusual sentence will deter theft and benefit shoppers who could face higher prices or store closures if thefts continue. The free car washes will take place on weekends in March and April.
A Michigan judge is putting sponges in the hands of shoplifters, ordering them to wash cars in a Walmart parking lot when spring arrives.
“I don't think everybody that steals is a bad person. Sometimes people are just down on their luck,” said Clothier, who was recently elected to Genesee County District Court. “But there's going to be consequences when you break the law.” The judge said Walmart is “on board” and will provide water and supplies. The company's Arkansas headquarters didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment Friday.
