The boost to a city’s tourism industry from a Michelin Guide is so coveted that some cities, Toronto included, pay for the chance to have their own guide. The exact value of the deals struck between tourism organizations and Michelin are not usually public, and Michelin maintains that it doesn’t enter cities just because it’s been asked to — the city has to warrant a guide, and its inspectors are impartial in their evaluation of a city’s dining scene, they say.
It also raises the profile of Toronto as a whole, putting it on the same level as other cities with guides, like New York or Paris, said Smith.
