Today’s Conservative Party broke with its left\u002Dleaning Red Tory roots years ago
Several commentators had encouraged him to jump in and make it a competitive race. There’s been some analysis of the diminished role of moderate Conservatives in the party, and how his campaign could help correct this. National Post columnist Tasha Kheiriddin, who opted not to run for the party leadership this week, threw her support behind Charest as “the candidate that I believe can best unify the party and win the next election.
I’ve met Charest. He’s a nice man. He’s intelligent and engaging. He’s someone you could happily break bread with. He has plenty of political experience. He’s been, and could once again be, a senior minister in a Conservative cabinet. He served in then-Prime Minister Brian Mulroney’s cabinet in several roles, including Environment Minister. He was involved in negotiations with the U.S. over acid rain, and was a special committee member during the failed Meech Lake Accord. After the disastrous 1993 election, Charest became leader of a two-person caucus . That wasn’t his fault, but he was clearly unable to recapture most of its party’s lost support and reputation.
Today’s Conservative Party broke with its left-leaning Red Tory roots years ago. There are still Red Tories in Canada, and some of them are in the party ranks. However, the vast majority of past and present MPs, current and ex-staffers and grassroots supporters are firmly on the right-leaning Blue Tory side. Only the most oblivious of political analysts, or the biggest of political liars, would believe this fact to be incorrect.
