Transcending the name change itself was the fact that a majority of the council and Mayor Mark Sutcliffe embraced the motion, which made explicit reference to the foundational injustices at the heart of the theocratic Iranian regime. The IRGC is responsible for spreading terror throughout the world. Its actions radiate beyond borders, ranging from the 1994 killing of 85 civilians at the Jewish AMIA Community Centre in Argentina, to the 2020 downing of Flight PS752 that resulted in the murders of 55 Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents.
The motion acknowledges Amini’s Kurdish background and also addresses the foundational issues that emerged in Iran since the Islamic Revolution, which installed the mullahs in power in 1979. In acknowledging the origins of Iran’s decline, the City of Ottawa makes a powerful declaration against the Islamic regime itself. B’nai Brith applauds this development.
