BREAKING: Michael Gove apologises to ‘everyone who stuck to rules’ amid No 10 party claims

Despite the concessions, Mr Gove sought to defend the prime minister’s position and the culture at Downing Street.

‘The key thing about the culture in Downing Street that I recall is one of hard work, dedication, focus’, he added, praising ‘dedicated public servants’ who were ‘were working all the hours the lord sends, in order to try and make sure we delivered an effecitve programme of support for those who were vulnerable’.

Mr Neil, who is chairman of the Spectator, also claimed that Boris had a ‘deputy who did most of his work’ while editor of the magazine from 1999 to 2005 and suggested the issue led to his ‘amicable departure’.
