"We were in constant sunlight between the Earth and the Moon," Collins says. To keep the spacecraft from overheating on the side closest to the Sun, Apollo 11 rotated constantly, like a rotisserie chicken -- a maneuver the crew jokingly called the"barbecue roll." The
"The first time we saw the Moon up close, it was a magnificint spectacle. It was huge. The Sun was coming around it, cascading and making a golden halo, and it filled our entire window," said Collins. But although they were looking out the spacecraft window at a whole rocky world where no human had ever set foot, the Apollo 11 crew were more amazed by the sight of their distant homeworld."It was nothing compared to the sight of the tiny Earth.
