Five Mi'kmaw communities in Nova Scotia have made a significant investment in the casino industry by purchasing Pure Canadian Gaming, which operates casinos in Alberta. This move aims to generate revenue and support essential services within each community.
Five Mi'kmaw communities in Nova Scotia, Millbrook, Paqtnkek, We'koqoma'q, Glooscap and Annapolis Valley, have joined forces to form Indigenous Gaming Partners (IGP). This collective has purchased Pure Canadian Gaming, a company that operates casinos in Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge, Alberta . IGP aims to generate financial independence for the five participating Mi'kmaw communities.
While each community currently has smaller gaming ventures like video lottery terminals, this acquisition signifies a major leap into the wider gaming industry. Michael Peters, chair of IGP and a member of Glooscap First Nation, emphasized that this move not only diversifies their portfolio but also expands their geographic reach. He explained that the Alberta market differs significantly from Nova Scotia's, allowing for revenue diversification. The revenue generated from the casinos will be reinvested into each community, supporting initiatives such as housing, social programs, healthcare, and other essential services. Although IGP has no immediate plans to build casinos in Nova Scotia, Peters stated that the group is actively seeking growth opportunities across Canada. He highlighted that other Mi'kmaw communities in Nova Scotia are also pursuing similar ventures, including acquiring shipyards, seafood companies, and engaging in energy projects
