The feds will send $2.2 billion in gas tax to municipalities and First Nations, which could mean an extra $130 million for transit in Metro.

A one-time increase in the amount of gas tax money transferred from the federal government to communities could lead to more transit investment in Metro Vancouver.

That could mean an extra $130 million for transit in Metro Vancouver, according to TransLink, the regional transportation authority. TransLink applies to Metro Vancouver’s board of directors for gas tax funds for transit projects. The Union of B.C. Municipalities holds federal gas tax money in a special account and transfers it to TransLink after receiving formal approval notification from the board.

A review of the Metro Vancouver board’s federal gas tax fund expenditures policy will take place this year.
