“Creating more equitable access to nature is a pathway to improving health outcomes and enhancing well\u002Dbeing,” according to a report.
The survey was part of a study to understand how to promote the use of bicycling and public transit to access the parks.
“People are always asking about what hikes they can do by transit,” said Stephen Hui, author of several hiking books, includingHui suggested that dedicated park shuttles from “strategic points along rapid transit lines” could be very effective at shifting people away from driving. He highlighted the“Being able to take that from Canada Place, at the end of the SkyTrain line, to Grouse, with no stops is awesome,” he said. “I’m going to use that this summer.
Despite the strong support for better transit access, there doesn’t appear to be a strong correlation between current transit access to parks and increased transit use, according to the report, and it wasn’t clear why. The report noted that the “limited amount” of data on visitors made analysis difficult. Only two visitor surveys have been completed in the past 10 years, in 2013 and 2019.Hui said improving transit service to parks and improving messaging about those services could help.
