Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced the termination of its third-party fact-checking program and its replacement with a user-driven 'Community Notes' system, similar to the model employed by X (formerly Twitter). Meta cited concerns over bias among expert fact-checkers and the excessive volume of content flagged for review. The new approach, set to roll out gradually across the US over the next few months, will rely on crowdsourced contributions from users to identify potentially misleading posts. Additionally, Meta intends to relax content restrictions on certain topics considered part of mainstream discourse, such as immigration and gender, while maintaining strict enforcement against illegal and harmful content like terrorism, child sexual exploitation, and drug-related materials.

Instead, it will pivot to a Community Notes model that uses crowdsourced fact-checking contributions from users. The Associated Press had participated in Meta’s fact-checking program previously but ended its participation a year ago.
