, in which the Cardinals were unable to get off a game-winning field goal attempt in time, Friday’s game came down to a 33-yard field goal from Mentor’s Dylan Tackett that sailed short with three seconds left. A relentless line of Wildcats were scrambling to impact the play.
On multiple occasions when Mentor was trying to muster up any type of points, a bevy of Wildcats were there to deny them. Senior linebacker Ryan Ardire came away with a sack and a pair of tackles for loss as the defense hunkered down inside enemy territory. They just wouldn’t budge. The Cardinals finally broke through early in the fourth quarter with a 46-yard touchdown pass from Fox to Austin Van Huss with 4:53 left in the game.
Both teams opened up the game with long-winded drives as Mentor stalled out on fourth-and-2 just outside the 20. The Wildcats drove all the way down on the ensuing drive, but a 44-yard field from Tommy Kilbane was blocked. With the first-half clock winding down, St. Ignatius finally broke through, muscling their way inside the 30 on a 12-yard rush from Ritt. Kilbane redeemed himself with a 34-yard field goal to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
