Old Colony Mennonite Church students from southwestern Ontario remove tree trunks and debris from a Glace Bay home following post-tropical storm Fiona last fall. CONTRIBUTED - IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY MINES, N.S. — Almost a year after post-tropical storm Fiona pummelled much of Cape Breton, Ben Lomond is finally getting some assistance to fix up the interior of his two-storey house.

“Then over the next couple of weeks , I started seeing the walls start buckling upstairs. It took a while for all that water to saturate.” Their visit to the island came to an end Thursday afternoon with a celebration at the Sydney River United Protestant Church, the service’s Cape Breton home base since June. Before that, MDS has been hosted by Camp Bretondean, an Anglican Church camp on Hillside Road near Albert Bridge from last October and November, and then again from March to June before the camp needed its facilities back for summer programs for children and youth.

Ben Lomond, outside his Sydney Mines home:"I’m just overwhelmed that they’re here," the 56-year-old said of the help he received from the Mennonite Disaster Service. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POST - IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTAnother volunteer working on Lomond’s home, Norma Wiebe of Winkler, Man., said her lasting memory of visiting Cape Breton was watching the reaction of a New Aberdeen homeowner as Wiebe whacked away overgrown elephant ear plants on the property.

“I feel like I’ve built a long relationship with these folks,” McCarron said prior to Thursday’s service in Sydney River. “They’ve been my rock, my foundation over the last eight months they’ve been able to deal with community and such vulnerable folks.”
