An outbreak of meningococcal disease in Florida prompted health authorities to urge men who have sex with men, as well as some college students, to get vaccinated against the disease. The serious and potentially fatal illness, which can cause infections in the brain, spinal cord and bloodstream, has infected at least 46 people in Florida since December, a spokesman for the state Department of Health said Wednesday. This number is more than double Florida’s five-year average of 21 cases of meningococcal disease a year. Orange County, where Orlando is located, has reported 13 cases.
