Professor Jenny Graves of Australia's La Trobe University believes a combination of genes, hormones, behavior, and the immune system may make men more susceptible to the disease.

In patients from the public data set who died, fever and cough were the most common symptoms, at 86 percent and 67 percent of cases, respectively. Again, diarrhea was less common, at 18 percent.
