Race called off four hours before it was scheduled to start with the opening swim leg in the river
The Seine River flows in front of the Pont Alexandre III bridge, site of the triathlon events at the 2024 Summer Olympics , July 29, 2024, in Paris. The race was called off four hours before it was scheduled to start at 8 a.m. local time with the opening swim leg in the river. The event is now slated to take place on Wednesday along with the women’s race, although both could be postponed again if the water quality does not improve.
The quality of the water in the Seine has been a concern for months, and that worry has increased recently after the cancellation of practice sessions in the river on Sunday and Monday. Nonetheless organizers had been hopeful that the race would go ahead on Tuesday. The main problem has been wet weather in May and June and the steady rainfall last Friday and Saturday. Excessive rain can overwhelm treatment centres and cause contaminated rainwater to run off from farm fields and other areas along the riverbank.
Canada has three athletes competing in triathlon; Tyler Mislawchuk and Charles Paquet who were supposed to race Tuesday and Emy Legault who is in the women’s event on Wednesday.
