Memorial, Dobie baseball teams lock up state playoff berths
Jake Creason had a big contribution in defeating Dobie. He drove in two runs and turned a 5-3 double play. What will 121/3 innings of shutout ball get a high school baseball team in the month of April? A coveted Class 6A state playoff berth, that’s what they get.
The twin wins improved Memorial’s district ledger to 7-2 and in sole possession of second place. The Mavs still have an outside shot at claiming a share of the district championship like they did last year, but it will take a sweep of the red-hot Deer next week to get that prize. Deer Park head coach Chris Rupp watched part of the Memorial-Dobie contest last Thursday.
Gregory took the hill with two outs in the second inning after Pasadena had cut a Memorial 2-0 advantage in half. It was all over once Gregory began throwing his fastball, curveball and change-up. Offensively, Marcus Lind drove in the team’s fifth and sixth runs with a double in the second and a single in the sixth. Sandwiched in between was another single in the fourth.
In the win over Dobie, Stallings was the beneficiary to his defense turning two double plays on top of a rare right fielder’s throw to first base to get the batter, going in the book as a 9-3 out. “Each game, he’s gotten better. He’s pretty unbeatable when he does that kind of stuff. It’s always battle with those guys, but Hayden was attacking the zone very well. He’s able to throw his curveball at any time in the count for a strike. When you’re doing that in high school, you’re going to be pretty effective,” Garza said.Stallings had little wiggle room for three innings and the Mavs lead only 1-0. But when Creason roped a double for two more runs, the pressure was for the most part gone.
