Months after the initial flag lowering, residential schools had fallen off the national conversation, despite a snap federal election and the election of a new Assembly of First Nations chief, both during the summer.
Less than a week before our days of commemoration, the federal government and the Assembly of First Nations made a decision on raising/lowering the flags on November 8 and 11. They have been able to get the logistics figured out for Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day. The decision to keep them raised after November 11 was also a milestone in this matter.Article content
When you ask a First Nations chief what are they dealing with today, they will tell you suicides and crime. If you ask AFN what issues they are we dealing with, they will tell you climate change.
