A Local Culinary Adventure: inspired by Halifax's Seaport Market | SaltWire #cooking #cookingtipsThe 33-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu sensation has been living in Halifax for the past three years, so when an opportunity to return home to Rio de Janeiro comes along, Costa is all in.
Her latest Brazilian adventure was in August when she attended the IBJJF Floripa Winter International Open and the Vitória International Open.“This time, I went there after a year without competing. So I did two tournaments. Got to the finals against one of the best girls in the world right now. I ended up losing that tournament. Then I went to my second and I won that tournament. I had a great time there.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is described as a self-defence martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds.“I’m excited to help Brazilian jiu-jitsu grow in Nova Scotia,” said Costa. “We have students just starting to compete for the very first time, which is very exciting. In November, we are starting a women’s-only club. I feel like a lot of women feel intimidated because they might think it’s an MMA thing, but it is not.
She didn’t take to the popular school sports of soccer, basketball, volleyball and handball, but Costa knew she needed something to stay active. “I started it because I wanted to find something to help me feel more confident in self-defence and also because I felt that I needed to do some activity.”She’s 7,800 kilometres from her native Brazil, but very happy in Halifax.
