Gender equality has been a long-standing priority for Melinda Gates which is why she pledged $1 billion

On Wednesday morning, Melinda Gates announced that she is pledging $1 billion to promote gender equality in the U.S. over the next 10 years. Gender equality has been a long-standing priority for Gates, and one she has supported through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Pivotal Ventures, the investment and incubation company she founded in 2015.

Through Pivotal Ventures, Gates and her team will use the $1 billion to identify and fund organizations and policy makers committed to the three priorities. That will include organizations that do a number of things, like fighting against workplace sexual harassment and discrimination, dismantling barriers that hold women back from achieving leadership positions, increasing representation of women in traditionally male-dominated industries and pressuring institutions to reform.

“$1 billion is a lot of money, but I also recognize that it’s only a small fraction of what’s necessary,” she wrote in athat announced her pledge, “That’s why I hope the financial commitment I’m making today is seen as both a vote of confidence in the experts and advocates who are already working on these issues—and an invitation for others to join the cause and make commitments of their own. Equality can’t wait, and no one in a position to act should either.

expand women’s power and influence in society. I think of power and influence as the ability to make decisions, control resources, and shape perspectives,” she wrote, “It is something women exercise in their homes, in their workplaces, and in their communities.” While “power” and “influence” are descriptions not usually attributed to women, she said that they are the best way to explain the power disparity between men and women.
