The hurricane killed more than 3,000 people and caused $91.61 billion worth of damage.
Mel Gibson’s new blockbuster movie Force of Nature has come under fire for taking place during a hurricane in Puerto Rico, just three years after the country’s devastating real life natural disaster.
In real life, Puerto Rico was ravaged by category 5 Hurricane Maria in September 2017 and it’s regarded to be the worst natural disaster to affect the island and surrounding areas in history.President Donald Trump was heavily criticised for his administration’s response to the disaster, which was deemed slow and inadequate. Celebrities rallied to help relief efforts for the severely damaged island, which is still recovering today.
Offended by the storyline, one Twitter user remarked: ‘So I just saw that Mel Gibson is trending and why… Dude, if you’re going to do a movie about PR being hit by Cat. 5 hurricane, could actually make it something meaningful, revolving around Boricuas that had to suffer through that kind of disaster, and not whatever this s**t is?’
‘Oh great Mel Gibson is in a movie that takes place during hurricane Maria and it’s filmed in PR and he’s fighting a bunch of “bad guy” ricans also all the good guy cops are white? Too much to dissect. Cool how an entire islands trauma has turned into an action movie [sic],’ another weighed in.One stated: ‘Hollywood stays benefiting off of people’s hardships. Hopefully Mel Gibson can find a way to give back to the people of that hurricane.
