The Sharks and Blues opened the Western Conference Final with a bang (imacSportsnet)
further elevated the intensity Saturday as if they were trying to settle the Western Conference Final in the first half hour.
It appeared Couture might make it 2-0 as he fought to get clear on a breakaway, only to be hooked from behind without penalty by Jaden Schwartz, then shoved heavily into the end boards. As Couture struggled to get up, the Blues countered and Schwartz’s shot clipped teammate Joel Edmundson and beat Sharks goalie Martin Jones between his glove and pad to tie the game at 9:13.
Before it expired, Joe Pavelski bunted the rebound from his own shot behind Blues goalie Jordan Binnington to make it 2-1 at 11:24, a few seconds after Sharks defenceman Brent Burns beautifully disguised his goal-side pass to Pavelski. Kevin Labanc made it 3-1 for San Jose at 7:41, cutting to the slot behind lead blocker Marcus Sorensen before beating Binnington stick side.
