.MeghanMcCain Opens Up About Her “Horrendous” Miscarriage Experience—And It's a Grief Too Many Women Know

McCain also expressed how joyful she felt when she first learned that she was pregnant—which was quickly followed by totally normal fears of going through pregnancy with everyone watching, and becoming a parent with all the questions that follow. But she still felt prepared for the moment, until she learned of her loss.

“I blamed myself. Perhaps it was wrong of me to choose to be a professional woman, working in a high-pressure, high-visibility, high-stress field, still bearing the burden of the recent loss of my father and facing on top of that the arrows that come with public life,” she wrote. “I blamed my age, I blamed my personality. I blamed everything and anything a person could think of, and what followed was a deep opening of shame.

Through her ongoing grief, McCain also wrote that she has found some solace in the thought of seeing her father again one day in the “hereafter.” But now, she sees the moment a bit differently. “There is my father—and he is holding his granddaughter in his hands.” Stay updated on the latest science-backed health, fitness, and nutrition news by signing up for the Prevention.com newsletter
