Megan Rapinoe says Trump's 'Make American Great Again' platform is 'excluding people.'
On Tuesday evening, CNN T, +0.48% anchor Anderson Cooper asked the co-captain of the U.S. soccer team whether she had a message for the president following her World Cup victory in France against the Netherlands. Rapinoe turned to the camera and did not hold back. Rapinoe, with her trademark pink hair, took issue with is “Make America Great Again” slogan.
Rapinoe, who is gay, declined an invitation from President Trump to visit the White House after their victory, but she told Cooper she would like to visit Capitol Hill and would meet with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer and Senate Minority Leader, and Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “We need to do better,” she added.Before Sunday’s World Cup victory, Trump responded to her refusal to visit the White House. The winning American team will receive a maximum of $200,000 each in prize money, including all other prizes along the way, compared with maximum earnings of $1,114,429 each for the men. That’s 18 cents on the dollar compared to men. At the World Cup match on Sunday, fans in the stadium chanted, “Equal pay! Equal pay!”
