The Wave House took a mere 140 hours to be printed.

Data Centers have become synonymous with dull and uninspiring concrete facades with windows few and far between. While this “boring” design is a consequence of safety regulations, it is less of a concern as long as these data centers are placed outside cities. 3D printing the building might be the new thing.

However, the city of Heidelberg wanted their data to be in the vicinity of users. To break through the notion, they looked to architects SSV and Mense Korte. The architects gave the walls of the data center a wave design, which ultimately gave birth to its name: The Wave House. While the wave design was aesthetically beautiful, it posed a challenge. Conventional construction methods would struggle to make these walls a reality.

Wavy wall façade of Europe’s largest 3D printed building, which would have been close to impossible to make with conventional construction methods. , the Wave House needed just 140 hours to be printed. A single COBOD BOD2 printer gave shape to the exterior structure at an efficiency rate of 4 square meters per hour.

The BOD2 printer laid a recyclable cement-like mixture in layers, forming exterior walls 177 ft long, 36 ft wide, and 29.5 ft tall. While finishing touches, including the roof, doors, and the wiring for lights and other equipment required a human touch, the project is nevertheless a commendable effort. According to At the inauguration, Hans-Jörg Kraus, managing partner of KrausGruppe Heidelberg, commented on the cost-efficiency achieved.
