Rick Powell kept the momentum going with plenty of dad jokes.
“When my friend told me he’s racing this year, he suggested that I step in and pace the OTQ group,” Powell said. “I emailed the Houston race directors to introduce myself, and they were really excited. I signed the contract in early January. I found out shortly after that that I’m going to be the and a native’s knowledge of Houston, where he offers in-house counsel to McDermott International.
In the weeks leading up to the race, Powell tried to get an estimate of how many women were going for an OTQ by checking. “I’m going to hold them back in the first 5K, so all of the elite men aiming for sub-2:30 can get out ahead. I want to loosen up the jitters and nerves and not let them go out too fast,” he said before the race. “I want to come through the halfway point between 1:22 and 1:23. Then we’ll ramp up a bit in the second half, and cross the finish line no later than 2:44:30.”
True to his word, Powell held 6:23 pace for the first 5K, then dropped the pace to between 6:15 and 6:19 through 30K. By the 40K mark, he was pulling the group at 6:08 pace, then kicked to finish in
