“What abolition looks like, to me, is building a community and a society where everyone has their basic needs met.'

This abolitionist movement is now gaining more ground at the local level too, where it began. Today a handful of candidates are running for office on abolitionist platforms, including Kristin Richardson Jordan, who is running for a New York City Council seat in Central Harlem; Nicole Thomas-Kennedy, running for Seattle City attorney; and Sheila Nezhad, running for mayor of Minneapolis.

Differences exist within their proposed visions for their cities, but like most abolitionists, these candidates believe that current policing wastes resources and doesn’t equate to public safety. They all emphasize how it's important for mental health specialists and other community members who are trained to de-escalate to take a more active role in responding to emergencies.

, such as shelter. “People will find a way to get money and survive,” says Nezhad. “We need more homes, libraries, green spaces, good schools, and compassionate health care.” Jordan, who has a background in education and recently worked as a literary specialist at the Harlem Boys & Girls Club, expresses a desire to specifically focus on young people.

that most people think of abolition as simply an absence of police, but the focus should be on building a robust, deeply humane social safety net. “Abolition looks like community care at its core,” Jordan explains. “So, more than the absence of jails, abolition, to me, looks like free quality education for everyone, housing as a human right, health care as a human right, free public transportation, mental and emotional health services, and restorative justice in cases where harm is done.
