It can be hard to find pieces that are both flashy and eye-catching enough for performances while still being the right amount of casual for street style, but Slashed by Tia pulls it off.

Wanting to be a fashion designer wasn’t something I just woke up and decided to do. I always said, right from as early as I remember, that I wanted to make clothes. I would make clothing for my Barbie dolls using a Nigerian fabric called ankara and take pictures and put them on my wall. I begged my parents to get me an internship with Nigerian designer Ituen Basi, who was also a close family friend when I was about 12 years old.The Renaissance era, the French Revolution, and my life experiences.

Why did you feel it was important to use fashion as a vehicle to talk about black culture and identity?Black culture and identity is something that quite frankly isn’t talked about enough, particularly in industries like fashion. So whether it’s through who I cast or where my inspiration comes from, it’s ultimately all about sparking conversations that need to be had and reclaiming what needs to be reclaimed.
