Dylan Gambrell might have had a chance to play with Auston Matthews at the University of Denver. Now it could happen with the Maple Leafs.
In the ensuing three seasons, swift skater Gambrell did quite well at Denver, a point-a-game pace and chosen 59 places after Matthews in the draft by San Jose. A 2018 Hobey Baker nominee, Gambrell split time between the Sharks and the farm, before a trade to Ottawa provided the six-foot right-handed shot exclusive NHL time.
“I’m excited, I think I can bring good energy, help on face-offs, the penalty kill, give momentum to the top six guys,” Gambrell said. “They’ve got so many superstars here and signed some big names .”Article content At Denver, Gambrell really hit it off with Montgomery, a coach he still stays in contact with for pointers, Montgomery winning last season’s Jack Adams Award for a record setting NHL regular season behind Boston’s bench.
But his playoff starts total just two games, none since 2019 with the Sharks, compared to the Leafs qualifying seven straight seasons.
