Activate your Online Access NowTarah Hogue, curator of Indigenous art at Remai Modern, said she has wanted to bring more of McMaster’s work to Saskatchewan since she started working at the museum.
“Meryl’s photographs are incredibly visually arresting,” said Hogue. “You have all these handmade costumes and props that she produced, which are very detailed and imaginative. And then you have Meryl placing herself in these different landscapes, which are often these sweeping, beautiful, stunning, immense places.”
This exhibit, which includes work from the past 15 years of McMaster’s career, focuses on questions of identity, history and heritage. “There is a real clarity of vision that is seen across Meryl’s practice through all this time,” said Hogue. “She has always inhabited this in-between space as an artist, both in terms of how she creates her photographs through performance and self-portraiture, and how she situates herself as one actor in this larger world of interconnected living beings.”
