A couple of hours later, the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canada Soccer said they intended to appeal the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. McIntosh went out hard, hooked herself onto Titmus’s bumper and rode with her the entire way. Her second-place finish won’t light up any record books, but in accomplishing it, she smoked the best female swimmer of the 21st century. So what does that make her?
The feeling that Summer would save us got a lot heavier in the past couple of days. Imagine a scenario in which McIntosh fades at the end and finishes fourth. It wouldn’t have been the end of the world, but considering how things have been going for Canada, it would have felt like an omen. She hasn’t erased the embarrassment of Canada’s drone scandal. If the COC and Canada Soccer get their way, she hasn’t even slowed it down. What’s their next move? ‘It’s unfair of you to punish us for the cheating we’ve already admitted because we prepaid our hotel rooms’? The more Canadian sports officials talk about the cheating scandal, the worse it gets for the rest of us.
